Course Overview :

The Academy’s teachers are specially trained in unique and proven teaching methods. Bridges Academy is the only school to offer curricula specifically created for the learning different student. We work closely with parents, physicians, and therapists in order to provide students with a learning environment that best fits their learning strengths. Our goal is to provide our students with academic, organizational, and study skills for success in a chosen higher education setting.

Generally, El Paso Bridges Academy offers Dyslexic, ADD, ADHD, and mildly Asperger’s Syndrome students the following:

  1. Small teacher/student ratio              
  2. Specially trained and degreed teachers, specially trained assistants               
  3. Structured classroom instruction                        
  4. Multi-sensory teaching for the multi-sensory learning         
  5. Individualized placement in reading, grammar, and math          
  6. Individualized Education Plan                             
  7. Repetition until skill/concept/information is learned             
  8. Science and social studies to state guidelines with emphasis on content mastery and study skills 
  9. Social skills awareness             
  10. Feedback in the way of reports from teachers for parents, doctors, and therapists       
  11. Speech Therapy (available for students who qualify through state guidelines)            
  12. Computer science          
  13. Emphasis on organizational skills           
  14. Physical education, drama, music, and art          
  15. Behavior plan to address the students characteristics and behavioral needs

 

Specifically, the Academy offers Learning Different Children the following curricula and programs:

  1. Alphabetic Phonics and Take Flight: the premier multi-sensory reading curricula for dyslexic students
  2. Wilson Reading: a multi-sensory reading curriculum for dyslexic students who can advance quickly
  3. ED-Mark: a carefully sequenced whole word approach for students who have difficulty with phonics
  4. Reading/Literature: a structured program for the student who can read but struggles with good comprehension and vocabulary.
  5. Reading Milestones:  an alternative reading program with syntax and vocabulary controls that targets 5 critical reading skills
  6. Building Blocks to Reading: a specialized reading approach that uses sound awareness with components of Sing, Spell, Read, and Write
  7. Excel Math: a curriculum for  the 1st- 5th  grade student that reviews until mastery is attained
  8. Saxon Math: a curriculum for 6th – 8th grade student that reviews until mastery is attained
  9. Touch Math: a kinesthetic approach to addition and subtraction
  10. Multisensory Multiplication Tables: a visual, auditory, kinesthetic approach for learning the times tables at 100% accuracy
  11. Glencoe Algebracurriculum for 9th grade that is clear and precise with built in review
  12. Science and Social:  AGS and Harcourt, web-linked curriculum
Specific Skills Series: curriculum that addresses skills in comprehension, application, and critical thinking.

Course Specifics:

Math:

Mathematics is an important part of our daily lives. Algebra provides specific Touch Math Referencesmath skills that lead the way toward the development of critical thinking and more effective problem solving. It's important to say that teaching and learning algebra isn't as mysterious as many people think!
By incorporating curriculum from standard textbooks as well as; from other sources,the daily lessons, exercises and drills, quizzes, and homework assignments can be tailored to fit the needs of each individual. Repetition is very important in order for the students to master certain basic concepts. Each level reinforces the previous one and from there, the subsequent lessons build upon the previous learning. The foundation for more complex computations are simplified. Daily assessment of the students progress is key to determining the pace of the class. Because Bridges students are bright and inquisitive, the task of teaching is very rewarding.

Grammar:Ed Mark Reading Materials

It is the goal at Bridges to educate every student to the best of their ability, and to the best of the students’ learning ability. Writing is an important tool in our daily life. Proper grammar usage, written or oral allows our students to communicate effectively. The students at Bridges are extremely creative and through hands on, and practical experiences they learn to channel their creativity through the written language.

Social Studies:Lewis & Clark Journey Map

Social Studies is used to show students how to work in groups and collaborate respectfully with each other to achieve common goals. By working in collaborative groups students learn to become active problem solvers by analyzing the cause and effect relationships and perspectives. They also learn to apply the social skills necessary to work cooperatively. The students learn about the past in order to understand the present and create a positive future. The final goal of Social Studies creates a guide for students in becoming responsible citizens.

Science:Inside Of The Human Body

In science class, students at Bridges participate in inquiry-based lessons. The opportunity is provided for students to examine the process of building knowledge through the scientific method and good arguments. It is critically important for students to develop abilities to decipher, collect and apply scientific information by asking questions and finding not one but alternate or correlating explanations.
